Tips For Creating A Unique And Memorable Funeral Service

Posted on

While the term funeral tends to indicate sadness, more and more people are trying to bring happiness to funerals. People want to honor their deceased loved one's memories and reflect on their lives. Keep reading for a few ways in which you can do this while participating in a unique and memorable funeral service.

Have a Letter Reading

One thing that you can do is to encourage the guests attending the funeral to write letters directly to the deceased loved one as if they are just away for a little while instead of forever. At the funeral service, guests can take turns reading their letters out loud. If someone does not want to read theirs, a volunteer can.

Something like this can be incredibly healing and/or entertaining, depending on what is written in the letter. After the reading, the letters can be buried in the casket with the deceased. Alternatively, the writer can choose to keep the letter as a keepsake.

Have a Casket Signing

For this idea, you will want to ensure that the deceased is being buried in a white or light-colored coffin so that anything written on it will show up. If you are concerned about being able to write on the casket with a permanent marker, speak to the seller to ensure that this will be able to be done without issue.

If you or someone you know is handy enough, and it is something that would not go against the wishes of the deceased individual, you could build a special casket or have one custom-made. This would ensure that the casket would work for this particular memorial ritual.

Create a Memory Capsule Box

A memory capsule, a variation of the time capsule, can be a great idea for families who want to help honor their memories of their deceased loved ones. In the capsule, which should be some form of an airtight container, friends and family should place something that reminds them of the deceased like photographs, cards, notes, keepsakes, etc. The memory capsule can be buried in a spot that was meaningful to the deceased or buried with the casket at the time of the burial.

Offer a Station for Memorial Stones

Another idea is to have a station set up with permanent markers and small stones. At this station, guests of the funeral can write their names along with a brief note on a stone in order to honor the deceased loved one. The family of the deceased can keep these rocks inside of their home, in the garden, or scatter them in an area that is particularly meaningful to the deceased individual.

For help on planning a funeral service, contact a local funeral home and speak to the funeral director.
